Chinese premier, U.N. chief discuss climate change

BEIJING -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday exchanged views on climate change during a telephone conversation.

Wen said that the United Nations played an important role in the quest of achieving international consensus, as well as in promoting the ongoing U.N. Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen to achieve positive results.

China is ready to maintain close communication with the United Nations, and would work together with it in this regard, the premier said.

The U.N. chief spoke highly of the efforts by the Chinese government in curbing greenhouse gas emissions, and the carbon emission cut targets it announced, saying it was a major contribution to the international cooperation on climate change.

He said the United Nations is willing to strengthen cooperation with China to make the Copenhagen conference a success.
