China Unicom sells more than 100,000 iPhones

BEIJING -- China Unicom, the nation's second largest mobile phone operator said Thursday that it had sold more than 100,000 iPhone handsets since the sales began at the end of October.

"Iphones sell very well on the domestic and we are very pleased with the response from Chinese consumers," Chang Xiaobing, chairman of the company said in a statement on its website.

Some 71 percent of the users subscribed for a two-year China Unicom's Third Generation (3G) service that is installed in the cell phone, the statement said. It allows users fast access to online video and news information.

China Unicom's WCDMA network covers nearly 285 cities in the country.
