MONTREAL, July 27 - Grant Hackett of Australia set a world record of seven minutes 38.65 seconds to win the final of the men's 800 metres freestyle at the world swimming championships on Wednesday.

Hackett slashed more than half a second off the previous mark of 7:39.16 set by compatriot Ian Thorpe at the 2001 world championships in Japan.
