The Japanese Olympic Committee on Wednesday selected Tokyo as the country's sole candidate for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Tokyo, the host of Asia's first Olympics in 1964, received 33 votes, against 22 for Fukuoka, the committee said.

Japan becomes the first country to pick its sole candidate city for the 2016 games. Tokyo will face possible rivals such as Bangkok, San Francisco, Madrid and New Delhi.
